Empire State Building going green

By SARA KUGLER – 14 hours ago

NEW YORK (AP) — The lights atop the Empire State Building already change colors. Now the building itself is getting a permanent green makeover.

The goal is to cut energy use by 38 percent, saving $4.4 million a year in energy costs.

Former President Bill Clinton and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg are hoping that the environmental changes at the iconic skyscraper will serve as a model for buildings around the world. They are giving details of the $20 million project at a Monday news conference.

The updates include replacing 6,500 windows to reduce summer heat load and winter heat loss.

Tenants in the building will be given individualized Web-based power usage systems so that energy can be more efficiently managed.
